Find your most fertile days
How does ovulation work?
Every cycle, one of your ovaries releases a mature egg — that's ovulation. It typically happens about 14 days before your next period starts, regardless of your total cycle length. The egg travels down the fallopian tube where it can be fertilised for about 12-24 hours. Your body gives subtle signals when ovulation is near: a slight rise in basal body temperature, changes in cervical mucus, and sometimes a mild twinge on one side.
What is a fertile window?
Your fertile window is the roughly six-day stretch when pregnancy is possible: the five days before ovulation and the day after. Why five days before? Because sperm can survive inside the body for up to five days, waiting for the egg to be released. The highest-chance days are the two days before ovulation and ovulation day itself. You don't need to time things perfectly — having that wider window takes a lot of pressure off.
Tips for trying to conceive
Have regular intercourse during your fertile window
Every one to two days during your fertile window gives you the best odds. Don't stress about hitting the exact ovulation day — consistency across the window matters more.
Start prenatal vitamins now
Folic acid is most important in the earliest weeks of pregnancy — often before you even know you're pregnant. Start taking a prenatal vitamin with at least 400mcg of folic acid as soon as you start trying.
Take care of both partners' health
Fertility is a team effort. Both partners should aim for a balanced diet, regular exercise, limited alcohol, and no smoking. Sperm health matters too — it takes about 74 days to produce new sperm, so healthy habits now pay off in a couple of months.
Be patient with yourselves
For healthy couples under 35, there's about a 20-25% chance of conceiving each cycle. Most couples conceive within 6-12 months. If it's taking longer, that's not unusual — but do talk to your doctor if you haven't conceived after 12 months (or 6 months if you're over 35).
